MEMORANDUM FOR ALL NYW PERSONNEL FROM: NYWG/CPDO 817 Stewart Avenue (Rear) Garden City, NY 11530-4856 SUBJECT: 2001 NYW NCO Academy 1. The 2001 NYW NCO Academy will once again be held in conjunction with the NYW Encampment at Fort Drum near Watertown, NY, from 28 July to 5 August. Applications for participants in the NCO Academy will submitted along with applications for the encampment and are subject to the same deadlines, fees, and application guidelines as the encampment. Please note on the top of your application and supporting material that you are applying for the NCO Academy. If you are applying for the Encampment and NCO Academy only one application is necessary (mark application for NCO Academy). 2. Over the past year the curriculum for the NCO Academy has been revised and this year’s attendees are in for an exciting and challenging time. Some of the changes include a newly revised curriculum, and a chance for participants to gain hands-on experience by assuming the flight staff positions for their flight. Some of the training topics include preparing and delivering a class, CAP written communications, drill of the flight, evaluating cadets, and parades and formations. NCO Academy participants will also have a chance to participate in activities not available to normal encampment participants including a visit to the Ft. Drum NCO Academy, training in land navigation, and a possible visit to the Air Assault School to learn repelling from Army instructors. 3. Qualified applicants must have a current membership card, be at least a Cadet Senior Airman by the activity and have attended a previous encampment. Applicants without a previous encampment will be considered on an individual basis. Those applicants without previous encampment experience must provide justification for selection such as letters of recommendation, personal essay, and/or resume of CAP and other leadership activities. Generally, applicants without a previous encampment should be a Cadet Master Sergeant by the activity and have at least two years of experience in CAP or similar organization (JROTC/Sea Cadets), or have had other applicable outside leadership experience. 4.
